So… What Actually IS a Sound Bath?

5 min read

Since I announced our Candlelight Sound Bath at Dodd Fit, I've realised there are quite a few of you who are curious about it…

But aren't entirely sure what actually happens at a sound bath.

And I completely get it.

If you've never experienced one before, you might be wondering:

What do I actually have to do?

Do I need to know how to meditate?

What if I can't switch my brain off?

And possibly…

“It sounds lovely, Amy… but is it all a bit woo?” 😂

So grab yourself a coffee ☕ and let me explain.

So, what actually is a sound bath?

A sound bath is an experience where you lie down, get comfortable and allow yourself to be immersed in sounds and vibrations created by different instruments.

At our evening, Erika from The Reiki Room will be using crystal and Himalayan singing bowls.

And here's possibly my favourite part…

You don't actually have to DO anything.

No reps to count.

No technique to master.

No trying to keep up with the person next to you.

You don't even need to know how to meditate.

You just get comfortable, listen and allow yourself to stop for a while.

And when I say that out loud, I realise how ridiculously simple it sounds.

But honestly…

When was the last time you gave yourself 90 minutes to do absolutely nothing?

I think we've become a bit rubbish at doing nothing

This is something I've been thinking about a lot.

Even when we're supposedly relaxing, we're usually still doing something.

Watching TV while scrolling on our phones.

Making dinner while answering a message.

Sitting down while mentally writing tomorrow's to-do list.

And so many of the women I speak to spend their lives looking after everybody else.

Work.

Children.

Partners.

Parents.

The house.

The dog.

The shopping.

The washing.

The WhatsApp group that somehow has 47 unread messages since you last looked at it. 😂

There's always something.

And that's really where the idea behind evenings like this came from for me.

I love helping women get stronger.

I love our classes, the noise, the laughter and the energy in the studio.

But looking after ourselves doesn't always have to mean doing more.

Sometimes maybe we need to do less.

So what will actually happen on the night?

On Friday 30th October, we're going to transform the Dodd Fit studio.

The place you normally see full of weights, workouts and women getting sweaty is going to look VERY different.

Think candlelight.

Mats.

Blankets.

Quiet.

And a room full of people with absolutely nowhere else they need to be for the next 90 minutes.

We'll begin with a gentle guided relaxation to help everyone settle.

Then you can lie back, get cosy and let Erika take over.

She'll use crystal and Himalayan singing bowls to create the sounds and vibrations around you.

You don't need to try to make your mind completely blank.

And you definitely don't need to worry that you're somehow doing it wrong.

You can just listen.

“But Amy… I can't meditate.”

That's okay.

You don't need to be able to.

And please don't imagine that everybody else will be lying there in a state of complete inner peace while your brain is thinking:

Did I reply to that email?

Did I put the washing in the dryer?

Brains do that.

Mine certainly does. 😂

The point isn't to be brilliant at switching your brain off.

There's no gold star for achieving perfect relaxation.

Just give yourself permission to be there.

And what happens afterwards?

This is another bit I really like.

We're not going to suddenly flick all the lights on and send you straight back out into real life.

As the sounds fade, there'll be some time for peaceful stillness, followed by a gentle awakening meditation.

Then we'll have iced flavoured water and a little sweet treat, with time to slowly ease ourselves back into the evening.

No rush.

No jumping up and checking your phone immediately.

Just a nice, gentle ending.

Because if we're going to do this, we're doing it properly. 🤍

What do I need to bring?

Not very much.

We'll provide the mats and we'll have blankets available.

I'd recommend wearing something comfortable — this is definitely an evening for cosy rather than glamorous.

You might also want to bring anything else that helps you feel comfortable lying down.

And that's it.

No special equipment.

No previous experience.

No idea what you're doing required.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely.

Come alone.

Come with your friend.

Come with your mum.

Come with someone who also desperately needs 90 minutes where nobody asks them a question. 😂

Please don't let not having somebody to come with stop you.

You won't be the only person arriving on your own, and we'll make sure you feel welcome.

Is it all a bit… woo?

I knew we'd get here. 😂

And the answer is: you don't have to believe in anything.

You don't need to know anything about sound baths.

You don't need to understand singing bowls.

You don't need to arrive feeling calm.

You can just be curious.

Maybe you'll absolutely love it.

Maybe you'll simply enjoy having 90 minutes where your phone isn't in your hand and nobody needs anything from you.

Either sounds pretty good to me.

Why am I bringing this to Dodd Fit?

Because the more women I work with, the more strongly I feel that wellness is bigger than workouts.

Yes, I want you to feel strong.

Yes, I want you to move your body.

Yes, I want you to look after your health.

But I also want you to feel like you're allowed to stop sometimes.

Without feeling guilty about it.

That's what I want these wellness evenings at Dodd Fit to be about.

A little bit of space in amongst normal life.

No pressure.

Nothing to achieve.

Just time that's yours.

And our Candlelight Sound Bath feels like a pretty lovely way to start.

Fancy experiencing it for yourself?

Our Candlelight Sound Bath with Erika from The Reiki Room is happening at Dodd Fit on:

📅 Friday 30th October⏰ 6:30–8pm🎟 £20 per person

Mats are provided, blankets are available and absolutely no experience is needed.

Spaces are limited because we want to keep the evening small, comfortable and peaceful.

And if you're sitting there thinking:

“I'd quite like to try that… but I'm a bit nervous because I've never done anything like it before.”

Please come.

You're exactly who this evening is for.

Slow down. Switch off. Simply be.
